Bed & Biscuit in Austin, TX is a pet care services facility and kennel offering dog boarding, dog grooming, dog training and pet products. Bed and Biscuit is a current member of the Pet Care Services Association as well as in good standing with the Better Business Bureau. Bed and Biscuit has been under new ownership since November of 2009 under Kara Crawford and Gene McWhorter. More information about the background of the owners can be found under the About Our Staff section.

The facility at Bed and Biscuit is full of character and possesses an interesting history. It is nestled amid towering oak trees in an attractive location less than one‐half mile from the Loop 360 Bridge off of RR 2222. The original structure was hand‐built in 1951 by a widowed farmer who raised three daughters in the house. According to one of the daughters, the family traveled all around the Hill Country picking up rocks and throwing them into the back of their pick‐up truck. They used these rocks to build their house. Marbles, tin can lids, and geodes were all grouted into the exterior walls and can still be seen in the existing structure today.

The original owner added the kennel building over 14 years ago and preserved much of the original property in creative ways. The front desk, which is in the original house, was built with salvaged wood from the cow barn, and many relics from the ranching days are in the retail area. The kennel building was tucked into the rear of the property amid hundred‐year‐old oak trees, none of which were removed. Gardens of native plants compliment the rustic buildings, giving a feeling of permanence and naturalness, and a large lawn blooms with Texas wildflowers in the spring. They constructed the kennel itself from the ground up, and there are three separate yards on the property.

ABOUT OUR STAFF

Becoming the primary owner of Bed and Biscuit is a dream come true for Kara. Her journey did not start in the dog world. She graduated in 1999 from UT with a degree in Electrical Engineering and worked for IBM… She had her sights set on becoming a dog trainer but discovering Bed and Biscuit in the Spring of 2009 quickly changed her focus to becoming a business owner…. of a VERY dog-centric company! The perfect fit for her to combine her business savvy skills and her consistent longing to work with dogs. (read full bio)

Gene McWhorter, also an owner at Bed and Biscuit, is not new to Bed and Biscuit Austin. He started doing playtimes at Bed and Biscuit back in 2002 and moved on to being a Kennel Technician in that same year. By 2004, Gene was managing Bed and Biscuit and involved in every part of it’s operation. Gene is passionate about seeing Bed and Biscuit thrive and grow. He loves the people, the property and, most of all, the four-legged clientele at Bed and Biscuit. When Gene and Kara met, they discovered they shared many of the same visions. Together they have big dreams for Bed and Biscuit Austin!

Katy is not a new face at Bed and Biscuit Kennel.
She is currently a Senior Kennel Technician and started working at Bed and Biscuit under the previous ownership in High School, over 7 years ago.  She started out helping with Play Times during the summer and holidays, and she has been full-time with Bed and Biscuit since the ownership change in November 2009.  She also has volunteered with the Humane Society since 9th grade and has fostered 8 litters of “bottle babies” (kittens that need to be bottle fed).  While in college, she volunteered at the Animal Shelter in Kerrville, and she has been pet sitting on her own since high school.  Katy started Vet Tech school in 2008, and her dream is to be a Zookeeper.  Katy’s passion for animals shows in how thoughtfully she cares for each animal that comes through the door.

Dustin Glasscock is a Senior Kennel Technician and is also no stranger to Bed and Biscuit. Dustin loves working with animals and worked closely with Gene under the previous ownership for almost 2 years. He has been full-time with Bed and Biscuit since the ownership change in 2009. Although many of our regulars may not know Dustin, he has a long history with many of our long time four-legged friends here at Bed and Biscuit. He works very hard to make sure our kennel stays clean and that all visitors at Bed and Biscuit are well cared for.
