Kara Crawford

Becoming the primary owner of Bed and Biscuit is a dream come true for Kara. Her journey did not start in the dog world. She graduated in 1999 from UT with a degree in Electrical Engineering and worked for IBM for a few years before moving to Santa Barbara, CA to work for a small software company in 2001. In 2006, she began an exciting role in the same company that required frequent travel to Australia. Although she enjoyed her adventures down under, in 2008, she was ready for a change and ready to head back to Austin. She spent almost a year as a successful technical recruiter in Austin.

But, in April of 2009, Kara, like many others, found her self job less. Kara took her situation as an opportunity to follow her true passion in life. Throughout her technical career, she had always fantasized about working with dogs, training dogs and working with people and dogs together. She volunteered with the Animal Shelter in Santa Barbara and dreamed of someday having the time to become a dog trainer, specifically for guide dogs or service dogs. It always seemed too crazy to leave a good, stable job to follow a new passion, but when faced with no job at all, her sights immediately set in a new direction.

By May of 2009, Kara was working as a Kennel Technician for a well-respected Austin dog daycare facility. She knew that working closely with dogs full time was the first step towards getting her where she was going even though she didn’t know exactly where that was yet. She had her sights set on becoming a dog trainer but discovering Bed and Biscuit in the Spring of 2009 quickly changed her focus to becoming a business owner…. of a VERY dog-centric company! The perfect fit for her to combine her business savvy skills and her consistent longing to work with dogs. Upon discovering Bed and Biscuit, Kara also met Gene McWhorter. Gene had been the manager at Bed and Biscuit for 5 years and had been working there for almost 7. She quickly understood Gene’s passion for Bed and Biscuit including the dogs, the customers and the kennel it self. Kara was drawn to Gene’s passion for animals and Bed and Biscuit and his calm and always cool demeanor. They began discussing a partnership that Spring and by November of 2009 were the owners of Bed and Biscuit kennel. Kara could not be happier to be at Bed and Biscuit!
