SAFE Training is much more than a "dog obedience" class. SAFE Training is designed to teach your dog good manners by teaching you how to communicate, motivate and be a good leader. By doing this, you will be able to give your dog the good manners he or she needs to live happily in the world of people. What's more, you'll also be able to prevent or correct many of those pesky problem behaviors that detract from the enjoyment of your pet.
The name (SAFE) stands for Signal - Action - Feedback - Effect. This method comes from the science of how dogs (and all animals) learn. It emphasizes building a strong social relationship between you and your dog by understanding your dog's capabilities as well as limitations. You also need to know a little about the "language" of dogs and how to be a good communicator. In SAFE Training, you and your dog will learn all of this as well as practical, every-day skills like "sit", "down", "come", "stay", "leave-it" and walking nicely on a loose leash. Our positive, non-aversive training methods are built on sound scientific principles and, as a result, produce effective, reliable results.
Our program focuses on training you to train your dog. We call this "people centered training". No one knows your dog better than you do, but it is our job to provide you with the skills you need to shape your dog's behavior. By doing this, you'll not only be able to train this dog, but all the dogs you'll ever own! Of course we'll always be around to help you, but we want to be the last dog trainers you ever need. We also encourage (but don't require) you to include all family members over 8 years old when participating in SAFE Training.
SAFE Training was developed by Animal Behaviorist and Training Director, Elizabeth Givens, MA, CPDT-KA over her 20+ year career training animals, including horses, dogs, birds and people! She is one of the two excellent trainers teaching SAFE Training classes right now. Kelly Springer is one of the youngest CPDT-KA certified trainers in the country. Kelly teaches SAFE Training classes as well as Agility classes.
